A Long Swim

A Long Swim is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that funds collaborative research through open water swimming, endurance athlete sponsorships, and more for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. To date, over $1,000,000 has been raised for the groundbreaking research being performed at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, one of the top ALS research laboratories in the world. A Long Swim has three related initiatives, including Marathon Swims, endurance athlete sponsorship, and Competitive Open Water Swims. The Marathon Swims, performed by co-founder Douglass McConnell have taken him around the world and included successful completion of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming (English Channel, Catalina Channel, and Manhattan Island). The Athlete Sponsorship, our newest initiative, includes sponsorship of triathletes, open water swimmers, and competitive runners. Finally, our Competitive Open Water Swims includes the hosting of open water swimming events of distances varying from 750 meters to 5k that are professionally timed. Additionally, beginning in 2015, A Long Swim initiated the plan to host an open water swim in the Chicago River, the first in about a century.
