The African Virtual University (AVU) www.avu.org is a Pan African Intergovernmental Organization established by charter with the mandate of significantly increasing access to quality higher education and training through the innovative use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The AVU works across Africa in English, French, and Portuguese in over 30 African countries, and it has trained more than 43,000 students since its inception. A Charter establishing the AVU as an Intergovernmental Organization has up to now been signed by nineteen (19) African Governments: Kenya, Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger, South Sudan, Sudan, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and Nigeria. AVU's mission is to prepare learners,using open distance and eLearning, to better contribute to the development of the African continent through provision and continuing education.
