at bempu health, our mission is to radically improve maternal and child health outcomes in developing countries by developing and commercializing life-saving health technologies. hypothermia and infection are among the top causes of newborn (neonatal) deaths. in india alone, 1 in 3 babies are born at the risk of hypothermia as a result of being low birth weight (lbw) and/or preterm (under 37 weeks). as such, the bempu hypothermia alert device is the first such technology in our portfolio. a newborn is said to be in a hypothermic state when its core body temperature falls below 36.5c. the bempu tempwatch monitors the newborn’s temperature continuously for one month. if the baby is ever hypothermic, it alerts the caregiver with an intuitive audio-visual alarm. this enables the them to perform kangaroo care to prevent hypothermia-related illness or death. bempu won the support of the gates foundation, the canadian government, villgro, echoing green and was recently a finalist at usaid's saving lives at birth challenge.
