Big Buddy Mentoring Trust

Big Buddy is a charity that matches boys who do not have a father in their lives with positive male role models. We have an estimated 8000 boys in New Zealand without a father, and while mothers and grandmothers do a courageous job of raising them alone, boys learn more about being a man of good character by spending time with men who can set that example. Statistics and stories continue to show that the presence of a mentor in a boy’s life brings about increased confidence, happiness and general well-being. This enables him to make healthier life choices, in turn improving his family life, schooling and future relationships and job prospects. To achieve this, Big Buddy isn’t looking for saints – we simply ask for men with a little time and a kind heart who can show up in a boy’s life for 2-3 hours a week. This consistent commitment is important to our boys, many of whom have been repeatedly let down. It doesn’t so much matter what Big Buddies do with their Little Buddies - watching the footy, going for a drive, playing ball, catching fish – but it does matter that they are there.
