Buckingham Branch Railroad

With four divisions and 282 miles of track, the Buckingham Branch is the largest shortline railroad in Virginia. The Buckingham Division consists of 17 miles between Bremo, VA and Dillwyn, VA. The Richmond & Alleghany Division consists of 199 miles between Richmond, VA and Clifton Forge, VA. The Virginia Southern Division encompasses 59 miles between Burkeville, VA and Clarksville, VA. In 2018, the BB added 8 miles of track by launching the Norfolk Division. The BB's newest division has expanded the capabilities of from train/truck transload to train/barge transloading as well. This newly acquired transload capability, combined with the premium locations that BB has available for industrial site development the Virginia Beach based operation provides additional opportunities for cost-effective, reliable access to the entire North American rail network. This extensive network is accomplished by four interchanges each with CSXT and Norfolk Southern and several other short line rail partners. The BB has eight train crews, 18 locomotives, and more than 40 freight customers. The BB has developed a reputation for dependability and flexible service that responds effectively to the changing needs of freight customers in today's’ U.S. logistics and transportation market. The BB also operates passenger excursion trains on the Buckingham Division in spring and fall, as well as Santa trains and local train to support community outreach in December.
