Children's Hospital School Leicester

We provide education for students from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who are too ill to attend their usual school. Our students are aged 318, and are taught across three school sites and at home through our outreach team. The school provides education for approximately 950 students each academic year a number that is increasing. The length of stay for these students can be from two days to several years. Our students have a range of medical needs, both physical and mental. Some may have chronic and/or life-threatening medical conditions that bring them into hospital many times in their childhood and adolescence. Some have degenerative medical conditions or acquired brain injuries or are recovering from major surgery. A significant number have social, emotional and/or complex mental health needs. The four areas of the school: Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI): Educates any child of school age during their time as an inpatient. Some children regularly attend the hospital for treatment over many years. Willow Bank Day School: A day school for up to 60 students aged 1116 who are unable to access education in their own school, mostly for mental health reasons. We offer an academic and therapeutic curriculum which is designed to meet students academic requirements while taking account of their other needs. Ward 3, Coalville Hospital: This is a psychiatric inpatient unit for young people. Young people are admitted either in a state of crisis, or when their circumstances and presentation become complex and they have to be assessed. We provide access to education for inpatients, providing a range of activities within a safe and enabling setting. Outreach team: Home tuition teachers for primary and secondary students who are unable to attend their own school for medical reasons. The outreach team teaches the courses that the students would be covering at their own school.
