Hospitals deal with a high number of portable inventory i.e wheelchairs, infusion pumps and beds. Studies show that a hospital with 500 beds owns approx. 5'000 units of portable inventory (10x number of beds). As portable inventory gets moved frequently between different rooms of the hospital, managing them becomes a highly complex task. As a consequence, staff of all departments lose precious time searching for equipment, processes get interrupted, and productivity decreases. Inventory tracking systems offer a solution by tracking the current location of inventory. However, existing systems are often cost-prohibitive, as they rely on the deployment of expensive hardware infrastructure in each room of the hospital. Our solution is based on a novel crowd-sourcing approach that eliminates the requirement of expensive hardware infrastructure. This allows us to track the location of inventory in real-time at a fraction of the cost.
