There is consensus that our consumer and market focused growth has led to some real societal and environmental damage. Technology and IT provides huge benefit but that has been lost in uncontrolled, ubiquitous growth in everything we do at work and at play. This will only get worse. It's hard to see how technology and IT can offer real benefit especially where that benefit is more than just financial reward. Benefit amounts to happiness, contentedness, and a knowledge that no harm is being caused to others, the environment or wider society. Too many companies focus on single-minded financial growth which, while they may and do promote good ethics + environmental concerns, cannot help but influence what they do and how they behave. We do not focus on financial growth. We focus on growth in technology and IT that benefits organisations, people and society and a reduction in harmful technology and IT that damages societal structures, undermine truth and honesty, cause damage to the environment or undermine people and their emotion well-being. We of course financially reward the people who work for us but hopefully and we think more importantly with a sense of happiness and that the work is meaningful. We need to understand how Technology and IT can harm people, organisations and society now and into the future, so that we only focus on what can benefit.
