The Department of Children and Youth Affairs was established on 2nd June 2011 by the Government of Ireland to consolidate a range of functions previously discharged by various Government Ministers. The Department focuses on harmonising policy issues that affect children in areas such as early childhood care and education, youth justice, child welfare and protection, children and young people's participation, research on children and young people, youth work and cross-cutting initiatives for children. Included within the Departments remit are the following organisations: Tusla (the Child and Family Agency), the Adoption Authority of Ireland, Oberstown Children Detention Campus, and the Office of the Ombudsman for Children.
