Launched in Geneva in 2001, the Global Initiative aims to act as a catalyst to encourage progress towards ending all corporal punishment in all continents. We encourage governments and others to "own" the issue and work actively on it, and support national campaigns with relevant information and assistance. The context for all our work is implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Our activities are designed to promote prohibition and elimination of corporal punishment of children in all settings, including the home. They include: - maintaining reports on every state and territory worldwide - briefing and reviewing the work of human rights monitoring bodies - producing a range of resources to support advocacy - providing individualised support and technical assistance to national campaigns - collecting and analysing research on the effects of corporal punishment and the positive impact of prohibition - promoting positive, non-violent discipline. We work directly with governments considering law reform, and with UN agencies, human rights institutions and international and national non-government organisations campaigning to promote non-violence.
