greyston is a hybrid social enterprise comprised of a commercial bakery owned by a 501(c)(3) non-profit. our mission is to unlock the power of human potential through inclusive employment, one person at a time. greyston bakery is the pioneer of open hiring®, a first-come, first-hired system that eliminates barriers to employment such as involvement with the justice system. 56% of all greyston bakery open hires surveyed in 2021 indicated facing at least one barrier to employment prior to greyston. the most commonly reported barriers were: arrest record, housing challenges, age, lack of skills and education. jobs at greyston bakery are supported by the sale of brownies for ice cream inclusions and through corporate gifting of brownie gift boxes. the greyston foundation provides transitional employment programs, workforce education and training, and social services in yonkers, ny through the greyston employment opportunity center (geoc). additionally, the greyston foundation works to scale inclusive employment by partnering with corporations to replicate our open hiring® model and/or variations thereof.
