Law Society Northern Territory

The Law Society Northern Territory (Society), formed in 1968, is a statutory body constituted under the Legal Profession Act (NT), which controls the affairs of the legal profession in the Northern Territory. The Law Society offers a range of services to solicitors, particularly for its 500+ members. These include functions, the Balance and Practitioner publications and representing the views of members to government, the media, business and the general community. LSNT is the only body in the Northern Territory that is able to issue Practising Certificates to lawyers, and the Society also regulates the profession. The Law Society Northern Territory also offers services to the community, including the handling of complaints about lawyers and coordinating community legal education events such as Law Week. The Law Society cannot give legal advice, however can provide a list of firms who have identified that they specialise in particular areas of law. Members of the public can also search for a Territory legal practitioner or firm on this website. The Society is staffed by a small Secretariat, and its affairs are managed by an elected Council which receives input from a number of specialised committees.
