Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre

Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre provides free legal information and advice to hundreds of Central Victorians who would otherwise fall through the gaps. The centre opened in 2005 following a campaign run by local agencies and individuals for an independent and accessible alternative to private practitioners and legal aid in Central Victoria. In the 2013/14 financial year we helped clients with 1200 matters. Of these, 30% of our clients had a disability, 66% relied on Centrelink benefits, and 4% identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. We work within a community development framework. Empowerment, participation, safeguarding human rights and confronting structural disadvantage are hallmarks of this framework. Our vision is social justice and human rights for our community. We value equality, respect and empowerment. Our mission is to deliver information, advice and support and to advocate for equity for people in our community. Volunteer lawyers provide our free Wednesday Night Legal Advice Service, supported by Law student volunteers. Each year we host up to six La Trobe University students undertaking their clinical placement as part of the Rural and Regional Justice elective. This provides students with exposure to the community legal sector, underlines the importance of social justice based legal practice, and promotes involvement in pro bono programs.
