LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation (LuMind RDS) believes every person living with Ds deserves a bright future, filled with limitless possibilities and the ability to become more independent. Since 2004, LuMind RDS has provided to date nearly $17M to Down syndrome research to meaningfully improve memory, cognition, and independence in individuals with Down syndrome. Our sole focus is to discover and develop groundbreaking Down syndrome research in Four Scientific Research Categories: 1) Prevent Alzheimer onset; 2) Improve cognition; 3) Develop gene therapies; and 4) Advance understanding. Individuals with Down syndrome a set of conditions caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21 face challenges with cognitive development, autoimmune disorders, early-onset of Alzheimer's and other conditions. LuMind RDS research has the potential to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands living in the US and millions more worldwide. At the same time people with Down syndrome may through participation in research help achieve a better understanding of many conditions occurring in the general population. It is our mission to stimulate biomedical research that will accelerate the development of treatments to significantly improve cognition, including memory, learning and speech, for individuals with Down syndrome so they: participate more successfully in school; lead more active and independent lives; and avoid the early onset of Alzheimer's Disease. Critical work done by highly-dedicated investigators funded by LuMind RDS has led to many important discoveries in brain development, sleep and cognition and to a lot of translational work, including the clinical testing of several promising therapeutic approaches in individuals with Down syndrome.
