Although mata-mata medien UG was formally founded in 2013, Hanno Baethe and Zaki Omar have been using this name since the 90s when they first started working together as experimental and documentary video and interactive media makers. They had also used the name InterAct for some time. Their works were born out of their own curiosity for topics such as: - Life is a Killer, a interactive video portrait of New York poet-performer John Giorno on CD-ROM, funded by the Cultural Media Fund of Lower Saxony; - Boom Boom Bang, a documentary for the NDR about Malaysian artists and their feelings and thoughts about booming Kuala Lumpur during the late 1990s; - Zurückbleiben, a cinema-located widescreen three-projection, three player interactive video installation reflecting on time and space in the digital age; - Spiel-Spiel, a image-recognition-based mobile application that connects children's clothing items to audiovisual content in the form of documentary clips, animation music videos, filmed shadow puppet performances, illustrated stories and DIY clips; funded by the medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg - Innovative Audiovsisual Content. Antonio Stilo joined mata-mata in 2015. He is an artist and a software developer. Antonio comes from Rome, came to Berlin several years ago and holds a CTO position with a Berlin Start-up. Together, they develop arts and educational interactive audiovisual media, one of which is "thingstellus", a further development of "Spiel-Spiel". "thingstellus" widens the scope to include stories of products by artisans from various backgrounds such as metal, wood, leather and concrete.
