mindarie regional council

The Mindarie Regional Council (MRC) is Western Australia's largest Waste Management Authority, managing the disposal of over 250,000 tonnes of waste generated each year by people living in its seven government localities. These being the Cities of Joondalup, Perth, Stirling, Vincent and Wanneroo, and the Towns of Cambridge and Victoria Park. Since early 1991, the region's household waste has been landfilled at the site operated by the MRC at Tamala Park, 35 km north of the centre of Perth. Some five million tonnes of waste have been sent to landfill at Tamala Park since operations began. The MRC in particular deals with recovery and disposal of waste from its member councils household green-lid wheelie bins. These bins contain general household waste. In line with MRC's vision and mission, the MRC began work in the early 2000s on a major project to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. In support of the State Goverments WAste2020 vision of "Towards Zero Waste" a Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) was built in Neerabup. Operated under contract to the MRC by BioVision 2020 Pty Ltd, the facility commenced operations in July 2009 and converts 100,000 tonnes of household waste from the green-lid wheelie bins each year into a market quality soil enhancer (compost), reducing the amount of waste currently sent to landfill. Collection of the yellow-lid recycling bin and bulk verge collection collection are handled by the individual Councils. Part of this waste stream still ends up in the Tamala Park landfill. The MRC recognises that waste does have a value as a resource and is committed to managing waste in line with the waste hierarchy and in a way that is sensitive to the environment and future generations. With a vision of "Winning Back Waste", the MRC is actively working with its member councils and other parties to deliver outcomes to achieve this.
