Independent agency of the New Zealand Government providing analysis and advice on productivity-related matters. It is closely modelled on the Australian Productivity Commission. The major output is the conduct of inquiries in fields nominated by Government Ministers who wish to explore opportunities for improved productivity in the nominated fields. Current inquires are on: * Better urban planning * New models of tertiary education Previous inquiries include: * Using land for housing (October 2015) * More effective social services (September 2015) * Regulatory institutions and practices (July 2014) * Boosting productivity in the services sector (June 2014) * Local government regulatory performance (May 2013) * Strengthening trans-Tasman economic relations (November 2012) * Housing affordability (April 2012) * International freight transport costs (March 2012) In addition, the Commission may undertake research at its own initiative into productivity-related matters, and is tasked also with lifting public understanding of productivity issues. It also coordinates the Productivity Hub network of researchers and agencies working on productivity issues.
