Nordisk Skibsrederforening (Nordisk Defence Club)

Nordisk Defence Club (Nordisk Skibsrederforening) was established in 1889 and is the world’s leading independent freight, demurrage and defence (FD&D) club. Our scope of legal services is much broader than at other clubs, and e.g. includes assisting members and other clients with drafting and negotiations shipbuilding contracts, charter parties, ship sale and purchase, ship finance, and more. We are a one stop shop! We safeguard our members’ and clients’ interests not only in relation to legal issues, but also in connection with commercial and strategic considerations. Nordisk’s policy is to resolve problems in a constructive manner through a combination of legal expertise and a practical approach. Each year, Nordisk’s international team of highly qualified lawyers handles approximately 2,000 new cases in jurisdictions all over the world. We also work for the benefit of the industry in Intertanko, BIMCO and towards universities and institutions. We have been on the drafting committees for most of the key BIMCO documents ever since we helped draft the very first one, the Baltcon charter party in 1908. Membership in Nordisk, which is obtained against an annual fee, does not only give access to the services referred to, it also entitles the member to have its legal costs covered as per Nordisk's statutes. Nordisk currently employs 24 lawyers, of whom 20 are based in Oslo and 4 in Singapore. There are 10 English solicitors / barristers, 3 US attorneys and 11 Norwegian lawyers.
