Our Mission: Osprey Village, Inc. was formed in July, 2008 as a South Carolina non-profit corporation to empower individuals who have developmental disabilities, advocating on their behalf to facilitate meaningful employment, recreation and social opportunities, and affordable housing in an inclusive community of their choice. Osprey Village was approved as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in April, 2009, and became a Dept. of Developmental Disabilities (DDSN) Qualified Service Provider in March, 2016. The Need: Up until early 2016, there were NO group homes providing residential options for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) anywhere in southern Beaufort County. There are still over 50 people in our area on the DDSN residential waiting list, with over 2,500 on the state-wide list. Our Vision: Osprey Villages goal is to change the current situation by developing a prototype purpose-driven, intentional neighborhood that connects our local adults with IDD and their families with the surrounding community. Our Model: Osprey Village is a local grassroots effort to develop a new paradigm for providing housing and support services for local adults with IDD by following the ages-old model of neighbor helping neighbor. Our Neighborhood: Our initial Osprey Village neighborhood in the Bluffton/Okatie area will be an integral part of the surrounding community, with activities, facilities, training opportunities and events drawing participation from seniors, families and youth from all around the area. Our Objectives and Expected Outcomes: Every resident of Osprey Village be able to enjoy: 1) Self-determination: we respect the choice of the individual to live in their home town and with housemates of their choosing 2) Integration into the Community on an ongoing daily basis, including meaningful work, recreational and social opportunities 3) Independent Living that grows and maximizes their skills & potential in a supportive setting.
