South Bank UTC is a school in Brixton for students aged 14-19 (students enter in either Year 10 or Year 12). Sponsored by London South Bank University and co-sponsored by Skanska UK, Guys and St Thomas and Kings College NHS Foundation Trusts, our partners are fully engaged and work with us to design and deliver projects where students solve real world problems and learn hands-on across a range of subject areas. This contextualised learning and experience of the workplace gives our students the edge academically as they develop understanding grounded in the real world. Students develop the technical skills and exposure to working practices to set them apart from their peers. Our specialism in STEM means students are able to apply their own imagination, ideas and creativity in their learning in a practical context, not forgetting to develop their transferable soft skills including teamwork, leadership and communication. We are non-selective, charge no fees, and are inspected by Ofsted. Given our very specialist, innovative way of working, students who choose to study with us have pathways into university but may choose to pursue higher-level apprenticeships or aim for employment. Our facilities are host to industry-standard equipment. Phase 1 of our building is now complete, with advanced engineering workshops supplemented by laboratory, computing and personalised learning spaces designed specifically for the STEM curriculum. Our workshops are the envy of many universities, let alone schools, with 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machinery, robotics and virtual reality all extensively used in our day to day learning. Our students are exceptionally motivated young people with a thirst to be creative and to work in an academic, technical environment. They are given support to become effective self-managers and team players, and they are in tune with our business-like way of working, We offer opportunities far beyond those in a traditional school.
