South Carolina Equality Coalition was established in 2002 as a statewide non-partisan coalition of local and regional GLBT organizations, individuals and allies with a mission to secure civil and human rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender South Carolinians. Both a 501(c)3 charitable and educational organization (South Carolina Equality, Inc.) and a 501(c)4 political organization (South Carolina Equality Coalition, Inc.) focused on social welfare and political advocacy were chartered. While originally organized as a coalition of GLBT and progressive organizations, both the c3 and c4 organizations of South Carolina Equality now provide leadership as independent organizations under the South Carolina Equality umbrella and are working for GLBT inclusive polices at the local and state levels. In 2012, a Political Action Committee, SC Equality PAC, was established to give the GLBT community a voice in the electoral process.
