Splitska banka is the fifth largest bank on the Croatian market, with a market share of 6,86 percent and more than 300,000 active clients. It was founded in 1965 as Komunalna banka with headquarters in Split, was later renamed to Investicijsko-komercijalna banka and in 1981 became joint-stock company under the name Splitska banka. In 2000, after rehabilitation and equity increase, the bank was bought by Italian UniCredit. Since 2002, Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG started the merger process of its subsidiary HVB Croatia, oriented to entrepreneurs and larger private clients and Splitska banka, oriented to retail, based on the purchase agreement of Splitska banka. The new bank, under the name HVB Splitska banka, served mutual clients through a unique comprehensive product catalog. During 2004, HVB Splitska banka significantly increased its network of branches, particularly in Dalmatia. In April 2006 Splitska banka was sold to the French Société Générale Group, after which it changed the name to Société Générale - Splitska banka d.d. On 2 May 2017, OTP banka Hrvatska announced the completion of acquisition of 100% shareholding in Splitska banka, and in this way Splitska banka became a member of OTP Group. By this transaction, OTP banka Hrvatska realizes indirect control over SG Leasing, SB Nekretnine, SB Zgrada, while Société Générale Osiguranje is intended to be completely acquired in the third quarter of 2017. It is expected that the merger process will last until summer 2018. Until then, the two banks will operate as separate legal entities.
