The European Graduate School

Welcome to the Division of Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought (PACT) at The European Graduate School (EGS). The EGS was created to be an academic institution that would function beyond the many constraints of traditional disciplinary structure. For the EGS, education remains a process that is both experimental and transformative, and learning is never divorced from critique. Faculty are given maximal freedom from cumbersome bureaucratic duties and encouraged to focus on teaching that is not just research-led, but in itself an active form of research. Its cross-disciplinary, low-residency MA and PhD programs offer students and scholars an exceptional academic experience centered on annual intensive seminar programs led by an eminent faculty in residence, in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Valletta, Malta. The result is a vibrant forum in which students engage with theorists and practitioners of renown. Since 1998, EGS has hosted both celebrated leaders in their fields and disrupters of all fields, including: Jaques Derrida, Boris Groys, Adel Abdessemed, Fred Moten, Judith Butler, the Brothers Quay, Slavoj Žižek, Carlos Reygadas Castillo, Gayatri Spivak, Slavimir Stojanović, Angela Davis and many, many others. In intensive sessions of 24 days, our celebrated faculty explore the foundations of modern thought and creative practice while addressing the most urgent questions of the day. They combine depth of questioning with experiment, attracting an international community of inspired students with diverse academic and professional backgrounds. EGS offers a uniquely modern educational opportunity by offering teaching of the highest level in flexible formats. In addition to degree programs at the MA and PhD levels, it offer non-matriculated certification and provides both free public online lectures and low-cost online courses. We invite you to join us!
