When these items are thrown out in our trash they end up in our landfills where they rot and produce methane gas and CO2. This methane gas and CO2 goes into our atmosphere, traps heat, and significantly contributes to our planet’s global warming. Eliminating food waste and garden waste from ever making it to our landfills, and repurposing single-use plastics is one way to reduce the amount of methane and CO2 released into the atmosphere. Food waste, garden waste, and some household waste make nutrient-rich compost. This compost can then be used to rebuild our soil, in turn growing healthy plants that absorb the carbon in our atmosphere and put it back in the ground where it belongs. Healthy soils also retain more water. Together we can reverse the damage we have done to Mother Earth, one plant at a time. It’s time to get back to the roots.
