True North Aid is dedicated to serving and supporting northern Indigenous communities in Canada through practical humanitarian support. With more than 60 percent of Indigenous children living below the poverty line, there is much work to be done. The issues facing northern communities in Canada are complex and are the result of many things that have transpired over the past 150 years. True North Aid believes that self-governance and self-determination is key to closing the poverty gap. As a registered Canadian charity, (813318 3696 RR0001) established in 2009, our mandate is to provide practical humanitarian assistance through initiatives established on eight foundational stones of support. These include self-determination, reconciliation, water, food, health, housing, hope and education. Our priority is to help ensure the dignity and health of Indigenous people through our actions. Our self-determination activities are designed to help inspire and empower Indigenous youth to pursue their dreams and, in turn, empower their people and community. Through reconciliation and education we raise awareness and promote an understanding of the tragic history of non-Indigenous/Indigenous relations in Canada, helping us to understand why we find ourselves in this present situation. As we do, attitudes and prejudices change and we open doors to a broader discussion and understanding of the options that are available. We believe that mutual cooperation and respect will make the difference.
