The Franco-German University (FGU) was founded in 1997 by means of an intergovernmental agreement (Weimar Agreement). The FGU’s main tasks include initiating, coordinating and funding structured academic degree programmes in a wide range of disciplines, from engineering sciences to humanities and social sciences, including economics and management, law and the education of teachers. These degree programmes are implemented in 134 university towns by the best universities, grandes écoles and Fachhochschulen in France, Germany and third countries. Together, they form a strong network of 210 higher education and research establishments working together under the aegis of the FGU, bringing together nearly 6,000 students and 550 doctoral students. There is no other comparable academic structure in the world. The FGU is at the heart of European university alliances and supports research at an international level. It actively cooperates with civil society and numerous economic partners.
