higher education
BGU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, apprenticeships and work-based foundation degree courses, with an emphasis on enriching the lives of its students, staff and the community it serves. BGU began life in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for women. In 1962 it was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College in honour of Robert Grosseteste, the thirteenth century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln. In 2012, following a successful application for taught degree awarding powers we became an official University, Bishop Grosseteste University. The past few years have seen a considerable growth in student numbers, with just over 2,100 students studying here. We have a strong background in teaching but are currently developing our many other courses and launching brand new for 2015/16 degrees including Counselling, Sociology and Health and Social Care, as well as extending our range of Master’s and Foundation Degrees. The University still occupies its single site in uphill Lincoln and although the original Victorian buildings are still in daily use, they have been extensively renovated and refurbished. Today the attractive I8-acre campus houses many modern developments, including purpose-built learning and teaching accommodation in the Robert Hardy Building, as well as dedicated facilities for Drama, Humanities and Social Sciences, and History. Across campus, there have been many other developments taking place, such as the expansion and modernisation of the Cornerstone Library, the addition of two unique eateries each serving a range of drinks and snacks throughout the day and a newly built en-suite residence block, Wickham Hall. Along with the recent improvements at BGU, there are plenty more developments in the pipeline for the next few years such as, increasing our course portfolio further and renovating the kitchen and dining spaces in Constance Stewart Hall into multifunctioning teaching spaces.

Bishop Ireton is a college preparatory, coeducational high school serving students from across the Washington Metropolitan area in grades 9 through 12. Founded in 1964, Bishop Ireton is owned by the Diocese of Arlington, and is rooted in the tradition of Salesian spirituality taught to us by the Religious Congregation of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, our founding religious order. As we follow our Live Jesus! Charter, we continue an affiliation with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales and will interact with other Salesian groups as well, as we collaborate on projects that express our mutual devotion to the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal. Bishop Ireton is fortunate to have dedicated lay faculty and staff, as well as a full time chaplain from the Diocese of Arlington and teachers and administrators from the Sisters of the Holy Cross and Franciscan Religious Communities. Faculty teach their students according to the unique spirit of St. Francis de Sales, teacher, missionary, bishop, and gentle saint.
As part of the Aquinas Church of England Education Trust, we are the only Church of England comprehensive school in Bromley and offer a distinctive educational ethos based on a Christian foundation. Our strong pastoral commitment ensures that every student is known individually and reaches his or her potential within the context of a caring Christian community. We are privileged to learn and work in a state of the art building, with outstanding facilities and are very proud of the success our students achieve. In January 2020 we received excellent feedback during our Ofsted and SIAS inspections: Ofsted judged the school as continuing to be Good in every respect with some truly excellent comments regarding our knowledge rich curriculum, the skills of our teachers, the progress of students and our fantastic Sixth Form; SIAS judged the school as Outstanding in every respect. These assessments underline the hard work and achievement of the whole school community. Committed to excellence, our curriculum is designed to offer a broad range of subjects, to encourage independent learning and to provide an outstanding range of wider learning opportunities. We expect the highest standards of work, dress, behaviour, attendance and punctuality. Working in partnership with parents, we provide a firm framework within which all students are able to achieve irrespective of their start point. We believe that everyone has something special to contribute and, as a Church of England School, encourage the moral and spiritual well-being of our students as well as their academic achievements. Worship is at the heart of our community and our Chaplain supports and encourages the students to explore Christian ideals so that when they leave us they are well prepared for life in the world today.
