Vision: An industry committed to putting people's safety first The Building a Safer Future Charter has been created to promote an urgent and positive culture and behaviour change in the safety of the built environment. It is about putting people’s safety first in how we plan for, design, build, maintain, and look after the safety of the buildings we live, work or play in and protect those that use them. The Grenfell Tower tragedy brought to the absolute fore the need to ensure the safety of all the buildings we live, work, and play in. The BSF Charter is a proactive response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building a Safer Future Review in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The Building a Safer Future Charter is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It is clear that in relation to the built environment there is a need for substantial culture change, to bring in new practices, to learn and develop and work hard at trying to reassure the public and regain their confidence and trust in the safety of buildings, both in how they are built and also how they are managed. The Charter has an essential role to play in helping to facilitate culture change and drive development and learnings around a collaborative community of those committed to putting people’s safety first. Building Advantage was created by The Construction Labor Management Council of Southeast Wisconsin to actively promote the benefits of hiring union construction contractors and trades people. We are comprised of nearly 20,000 trades people, 600 contractors and six management associations throughout Wisconsin. BASTA is a non-profit project dedicated to helping Austin renters work with their neighbors to improve conditions in their homes and communities. Our team or tenant organizers, lawyers, and paralegals support tenants access to healthy and safe housing through organizing, campaigns, strategizing, and tenant education and leadership development. As Austin's only renter organizing project, BASTA focuses heavily on change through collective action and consensus-based decision making. Conducting Outreach Connecting with renters helps us identify common problems they face. We reach out to renters by visiting their apartment complexes and attending community events. Forming Tenants Associations We support renters in developing Tenants Associations (TAs) in which neighbors discuss their common goals toward safer, healthier, and more dignified living situations. We also help facilitate cross-cultural interactions among renters with a focus on language justice. Educating on Tenant Rights We educate renters about their rights under Texas landlord-tenant law using popular education techniques such as visual aids, games, skits, and interactive presentations and games. Strategizing to Improve Conditions We work with tenants associations to help them choose the best tactics to achieve their desired outcomes. Strategies include collective requests for repairs, meetings with management and other stakeholders, and legal advocacy. Training Tenant Leaders Our goal is to build sustainable and autonomous tenants associations by cultivating tenant leadership. We train renters in outreach, facilitation, negotiation, campaign planning and research, and connect them with tenant leaders across the country.
