Em 28 de janeiro de 1959, um grupo de 32 representantes da colônia japonesa se uniu para receber e acolher os imigrantes que desembarcavam no Brasil depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Assim, teve início a Associação de Assistência aos Imigrantes Japoneses. Nos anos que se seguiram, para cuidar também da saúde da população, a Associação passou a oferecer assistência médica. Em 1960, assumiu as atividades do Junkai, assistência móvel voltada para imigrantes que sofriam de doenças como a malária e que é mantida até hoje. E, em abril de 1962, criou o Ambulatório Médico (hoje Centro Médico Liberdade) para ampliar ainda mais o acesso à saúde e os serviços oferecidos. Em 1972, a Associação passou a se chamar Beneficência Nipo-Brasileira de São Paulo, também conhecida por Enkyo. Hoje, é referência – dentro e fora da comunidade – pela qualidade de seu trabalho tanto na área de assistência social quanto de saúde.
