Duarte is a general law city under a council/manager form of government, employing 42 full-time and 150 part-time employees. Brief History In 1841, the Governor of Alta California granted former Mexican Corporal Andres Duarte and his wife were granted 7,000 acres of land and named it Rancho Azusa de Duarte. The Gabrielino Indians once inhabited the land that is now known as the City of Duarte. Decades later, on August 22, 1957 the City of Duarte and the Duarte Unified School District were formed.
