Community Interactions, Inc. (CI), founded over 50 years ago, is a non-profit organization that provides person-centered support services and housing in Delaware and Pennsylvania for people with intellectual disabilities, autism & dual diagnosed behavioral challenges. Our History: The vision for CI was inspired by our founder’s brother, Albert, who lived in an institutional setting for people with intellectual disabilities. Gerald was appalled by his brother’s living conditions. He wanted his brother to have a better life; one where he is part of the community, and surrounded by people who supported and cared about him. Gerald wanted his brother to have the life that we all want: one full of love, kindness, purpose, and as much independence as possible. When he established CI, Gerald’s goal was to create a private, non-profit community organization offering less restrictive programs, services, and disability and autism support in Pennsylvania and Delaware that promoted community integration and self-determination for individuals with intellectual disabilities and behavioral health challenges. The reality of his dream was realized in 1973, when Community Interactions opened its first housing for adults with disabilities in Delaware County, PA. Today, Community Interactions serves over 250 people in community programs, both residential and day, in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Community Law & Mediation (CLM) is an independent, community-based organisation that works to empower individuals experiencing disadvantage by providing free legal information, free legal advice, education and mediation services. At a national level, we seek to have a wider impact through our campaigns for law reform and by acting as a resource for other advocacy organisations.

CLI provides low and moderate-income people access to affordable legal services and develops volunteer opportunities for attorneys and students to serve.

Community legal centres are independent, not-for-profit, community-based organisations that provide a range of services to everyday people, including people experiencing discrimination and disadvantage. We assist communities across Australia. Each year Centres help hundreds of thousands of people through providing a range of services for individual people as well as more broadly for the community. Centres provide a range of legal services as well as undertaking early intervention and preventative strategies such as community legal education and community development and individual skill building. Community legal centres also play a key role in community engagement, advocacy and law and policy reform. More broadly, Centres work to develop and facilitate partnerships between legal assistance providers and legal and non-legal services (for example, domestic violence organisations, community health organisations, housing services and drug and alcohol services). This allows the Centres to provide holistic help to people and is designed to avoid escalation of legal problems. Centres provide services in offices, communities and health care settings across Australia. Centres also work together in National Networks to share information and good practice and undertake policy and advocacy work. Community Legal Centres Australia's members are the eight state and territory community legal centres associations. Together, we represent nearly 180 community legal centres across Australia. Only some associations have a funded Secretariat with dedicated offices and staff (NSW, VIC, QLD and WA).
