El Consejo Profesional de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (CPAU) es un organismo creado por el Decreto Ley 17.946/194 para regular la práctica profesional. Junto a los Consejos de Ingeniería y Agrimensura forma la Junta Central de los Consejos Profesionales creada por Decreto Ley 6070/1958, ratificado por la Ley 14.467. Las funciones primordiales del Consejo son: Matricular a los profesionales para que estén en condiciones de ejercer la profesión, de acuerdo a lo que establece la ley. Atender los casos de ética y aplicar las sanciones dispuestas por la Junta Central de los Consejos Profesionales de Agrimensura, Arquitectura e Ingeniería. Dictaminar sobre el ejercicio profesional siempre y cuando no implique la producción de una pericia - y sobre la aplicación de la Ley de Arancel (Decreto-Ley 7887/55 ), ya sea por orden judicial o según lo soliciten autoridades competentes, matriculados o particulares. Su ámbito de acción es la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires y los lugares sujetos a la jurisdicción nacional. El CPAU está constituido por 18 Consejeros, elegidos por el voto de sus matriculados activos y vitalicios cada dos años, renovado por mitades. La labor del CPAU se realiza a través de comisiones de trabajo integradas por consejeros y profesionales invitados. Tanto los consejeros como los profesionales invitados participan en forma honoraria.
