Cancer Council Tasmania is a non for profit organisation, working to minimise the incidence and impact of cancer on all Tasmanians. It is estimated that 1 in 2 Tasmanians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85. To reduce that incidence, and the impact of cancer in our local community, Cancer Council Tasmania: • Provides high-quality support services for people with cancer, their families, carers and friends; • Invests in cancer prevention programs which educate the community about lifestyle factors that can decrease the risk of cancer; • Funds local cancer-related research projects, contributing $340,000 per annum over the last four years; and • Provides a respected voice for the needs of people affected by cancer. Our work could not be achieved without the generosity of the Tasmanian community and the support of our dedicated volunteers. Over 90% funded by public donations, fundraising activities underpin our support services, prevention programs and cancer research funding. Something we are extremely proud of at Cancer Council Tasmania is that all money that is raised and donated to our organisation stays in Tasmania to directly assist our local community.

Cancer Hope Network's mission is to empower cancer patients and their loved ones with hope through one-on-one peer mentorship support from survivors and caregivers who have faced a similar experience. Through our one-on-one Peer Mentorship Program, we provide personalized, supportive connections for patients and caregivers based on their diagnosis and treatment, as well as their mental, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual needs, individual lifestyle choices, and other personal circumstances. Cancer Hope Network was the first one-on-one peer mentorship program of its kind for cancer patients and their loved ones, and we were the model for many similar programs that exist today. For more than 40 years, we’ve provided connections and resources to more than 50,000 individuals facing cancer. Over the last four decades, we’ve built on the simple, yet profound idea that through connection with someone who’s been there, cancer patients and their loved ones can navigate their experience with a greater sense of well-being and hope.

For 50 years, Cancer Lifeline has been dedicated to providing free support and services to cancer patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to optimize the quality of life for all people living with cancer, and all of our programs are based on the needs of people living with cancer. We offer people choices and information, and encourage them to take control. We stress inclusion rather than isolation. Most of all, we provide the environment where cancer patients and their families have the freedom to express feelings without being judged. We do this through more than 800 free classes, support groups and workshops in nutrition, exercise and artistic expression, direct financial assistance to low income people with cancer, and our telephone Lifeline (1-800-255-5505). One out of three people will be affected by cancer in their lifetime, and we are unique in the region as one of the only organizations providing these vital services. We are governed by a board of 20+ and employ a staff of 10 at our headquarters near Greenlake in Seattle, Washington.
hospital & health care
Since our inception in the UK, we have developed eleven centres across the UK. All provide exceptional patient care and advanced radiotherapy treatments. Our centres in Milton Keynes, Oxford, and Maidstone, also provide rapid access to diagnosis and chemotherapy services. We have recently opened our eleventh centre in Windsor, and our twelfth will open near Cambridge later this year. We have always taken a personal approach to what we do. At the centre is understanding how the person behind their condition would ideally like to receive their cancer care and support during what can be an unsettling and scary time. We then bring together the best doctors in the UK, with the newest technologies and create an environment that allows the person to live their life how they want to. We always aim to ensure a person is not defined by their condition, helping them make the choices that are right for them and their loved ones. Importantly, we know that it is sometimes the simple things that make the biggest difference, from the speed in which people get to see their doctor, the treatment that fits around their diary, the free taxi service that takes them to our centre. Then not forgetting the friendly team that greets them, the simple ways to keep in touch with us and the extra services like exercise, diet, stress and anxiety management, and general wellbeing. Its the little things that can make a difference to persons health. For many people, we offer an opportunity to receive the very best care, at a time when people may need it most. We know this works because the people that use our services tell us although we know we can always do more. As we grow, we want to continue to develop an approach to healthcare that treats the person, not the patient sitting at the forefront of innovation in healthcare, making sure people, at a difficult time, get treated the way they choose.

As one of Cancer Research UK’s core-funded institutes we carry out a programme of world-class science directed at understanding key aspects of cancer cell behaviour, and try to translate these discoveries into new therapies and diagnostic/prognostic tools to help cancer patients. The Institute benefits from close interactions with the University of Glasgow, including strong links with the University’s Institute of Cancer Sciences. We occupy a magnificent research building that has allowed us to develop some state-of-the-art technologies in focused areas to underpin our key research themes. We also provide outstanding training opportunities for young scientists and host many seminars and meetings to bring all the news from the international cancer research community to Glasgow.
