Canstruction® Long Island, Inc., is an all-volunteer non-profit organization formed to produce the Annual Canstruction® Long Island Design/Build competition to help feed the hungry on Long Island. Teams spend months designing colossal structures and then have 24 hours to defy expectations, logic and gravity as they build these fantastic sculptures from thousands of cans of food. Driven by the knowledge that their structures will change lives by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by filling the shelves of local food banks, dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to bring their creations to life. The following day, the super-sized masterpieces are judged in a variety of categories as this unconventional art exhibit is opened to the public. The cost of admission: just one can of food. At the end of the exhibition, all cans are donated to four local food banks: Long Island Cares, Inc./The Harry Chapin Food Bank, The Interfaith Nutrition Network, Island Harvest Food Bank, and The NEST at Nassau Community College, to feed hungry Long Islanders. Since 2007, the participants of Canstruction Long Island have donated over 480,000 cans of food and over $40,000 to help feed the hungry on Long Island. ABOUT CanSupport India In India, over one million people are diagnosed with cancer annually. Almost 80% are incurable. The country is estimated to have an equal number of patients with other incurable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, and with progressive neurological, cardiac and respiratory disorders. The case for instituting palliative care services nationwide could not be more pressing. The CanSupport home care program was started in 1997 by Harmala Gupta, a cancer survivor. She approached the then Director of AIIMS, Dr P.K. Dave. A pilot project began with 6 patients with terminal cancer being referred to CanSupport's free of charge home-based palliative care service. These patients lived within a 25 km radius of AIIMS. After 6 months, patients began to be referred on a regular basis to CanSupport. Today, CanSupport has 23 home care teams located in different parts of the capital city and the National Capital Region (NCR). They look after more than 1300 cancer patients, in their homes, at any one time. It continues to be a free service.
