The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine plays a lead role in promoting competitive and sustainable economic development in the agriculture, food, forestry and fisheries sectors, including overall responsibility for public policy and administration. The Department also has major regulatory functions, with the objective of maintaining the highest standards of food safety, consumer protection and animal and plant health. With over 3,000 staff, the Department operates from six large centralised locations across the country, with a presence also in a further sixteen regional offices and a large number of other locations countrywide. National Chiayi University (NCYU) was formed in February 2000 by merging the National Chiayi Institute of Technology (NCIT) and National Chiayi Teachers College (NCTC). NCIT was founded in 1919 as Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Public School. NCTC was founded in 1957 as Taiwan Provincial Chiayi Normal School. By integrating the two colleges, National Chiayi University is one of the few universities in southwest Taiwan offering programs in life science, agriculture, business administration, natural science, engineering, humanities and education.
