Le Mémorial du Camp de Rivesaltes s’attache dans son exposition permanente à restituer et transmettre l’histoire de ce camp du sud de la France, témoin des années noires du XXème siècle. Ce camp occupe une place singulière et majeure dans l’histoire de France puisqu’il fut successivement camp militaire, camp de transit pour les réfugiés espagnols, principal camp d’internement du sud de la France des juifs et des tsiganes entre 1941 et 1942, camp d’internement pour prisonniers de guerre allemands et collaborateurs, camp de transit et d’hébergement des harkis et leurs familles… Le Mémorial en proposant une approche scientifique, développe la recherche historique sur l’internement en France, le recueil de témoignages, la constitution de fonds documentaires et la publication d’ouvrages de références Il s’attache également à favoriser une approche sensible, en invitant les artistes et les sciences humaines à interroger les problématiques posées par l’histoire de ce camp et celles de notre monde contemporain. Il est un lieu d’échanges, de débats et de rencontres culturelles ouvert aux partenariats de proximités, aux partenariats nationaux et internationaux, colloques, séminaires, rencontres, workshops,… Le Mémorial du Camp de Rivesaltes est un Etablissement Public de coopération culturelle créé par la Région Languedoc Roussillon et le Conseil départemental des Pyrénées Orientales, soutenu par l’Etat, qui entend contribuer à l'éveil de la conscience civique et à la transmission des valeurs de la République. Il développe une approche pédagogique importante auprès de nombreux établissements scolaires. Il est doté d’un service éducatif de six enseignants et d’un centre de documentation. C’est dans un vaste bâtiment de 4000 m2, conçu par Rudy Ricciotti et l'agence Passelac & Roques, que se trouve l’exposition permanente, les expositions temporaires, l’auditorium, le pôle pédagogique, l’espace d’accueil du public avec sa boutique et son café.
