Punčochářství ve Varnsdorfu navazuje na tradici ze začátku 20. století. Původní německá firma J. Kunert a synové založená roku 1924 se po poválečném odsunu téměř všech zaměstnanců a znárodnění proměnila v národní podnik ELITE. Ten i přes problémy centrálně plánovaného hospodářství předběhl tehdejší chemický průmysl v Evropě. Jako první přišel s výrobou punčoch z Perlonu a na začátku padesátých let rozjel výrobu z dalšího českého vynálezu, Silonu. Po privatizaci v devadesátých letech ELITE málem zkrachovalo nejen díky nepovedené privatizaci, ale i zhroucení ruského trhu, který byl významným odbytištěm firmy. Změna k lepšímu přišla až s novými majiteli. Ti se rozhodli zásadně osekat počty zaměstnanců a nasměrovali výrobu k větší specializaci, vyšší úrovni a kvalitě zboží. S příchodem nového vedení v roce 2011 stal prioritou návrat značky do povědomí českých zákazníků všech věkových kategorií. Byly investovány značné finanční prostředky do moderních technologií a strojního vybavení, díky čemuž jsme schopni velmi dobře reagovat na poptávku trhu a držet se módních trendů. Každý půl rok přichází firma se 4 6 novými výrobky, které vždy zařazuje do katalogu, jež pro zákazníky od roku 2011 každoročně připravován. Grafická prezentace společnosti prošla také velkou změnou od nového designu krabiček, nových závěsných přebalů na silnější druhy zboží přes zmíněné katalogy či marketingové předměty. Momentálně je ELITE stabilní, i když mnohem menší než v minulosti. Soustředí se na výrobky s větší přidanou hodnotou a prodává převážně na českém trhu, ale i v zahraničí.
