Die Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH - kurz ELE - versorgt rund 240.000 Privat- und Gewerbekunden und etwa 1.200 Geschäftskunden in den drei „ELE-Städten“ Gelsenkirchen, Bottrop und Gladbeck mit Strom, Erdgas, Wärme und Energiedienstleistungen. Mehrheitlich zur RWE Deutschland AG gehörig und mit starker Beteiligung der drei Kommunen, hat sich die ELE seit ihrer Gründung 1999 zur festen lokalen Größe im Emscher-Lippe-Land entwickelt. Zusätzlich wächst die Zahl der Geschäftskunden im nördlichen Niedersachsen, so dass in Aurich Mitte 2011 ein erstes Vertriebsbüro außerhalb des Stammgebietes eröffnet wurde. Die Verantwortung für die Strom- und Gasnetze in der Region Emscher-Lippe hat die ELE im Rahmen der gesetzlich geforderten Trennung der Geschäftsfelder Vertrieb und Netz 2006 an ein eigenständiges Tochterunternehmen übertragen. Als unabhängiger Netzbetreiber ist die ELE Verteilnetz GmbH seither als 100-prozentige Tochter der ELE zuständig für Planung, Bau, Instandhaltung und Betrieb von mehr als 4.000 Kilometern Mittel- und Niederspannungsnetzen sowie über 1.500 Kilometern Gasleitungen. Um die Energielieferung sowie die Überwachung der Versorgungsnetze aufrechtzuerhalten, sind die Mitarbeiter rund um die Uhr aktiv: 24 Stunden am Tag, 365 Tage im Jahr. Insgesamt bieten ELE und ELE Verteilnetz fast 700 Mitarbeitern einen Arbeitsplatz. Zusätzlich beginnen im Unternehmen Jahr für Jahr junge Nachwuchskräfte ihre Ausbildung.
