The Ernst-Mach-Institut studies high-speed processes in experiment and simulation. We consider them from a physical and engineering perspective and develop solutions for industrial applications. Our center of interest is on security, resilience, reliability, efficiency and sustainability of structures, components and systems under dynamic and extraordinary loads. We analyze phenomena of crash, impact and shock-waves in materials, microstructures as well as in complex systems. Our applications range from components and design of structures to whole vehicles and defense technology systems, from buildings and infrastructures, urban systems and networks to satellite systems. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted by 72 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft employs a staff of more than 25,000, who work with an annual research budget totaling more than 2,3 billion euros.

In unserer Forschungsausrichtung legen wir großen Wert auf die Skalierbarkeit von Prozessen und die Überführung der Forschungsergebnisse vom Labormaßstab in den Technikumsmaßstab sowie zum Teil bis hin zur vorserienreifen Anwendung. 2018 waren etwa 550 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter bei uns beschäftigt. Unser Hauptcampus mit über 100 Laboren, vielen Technika sowie 3 Testcentern auf 21 Hektar Gelände, liegt auf dem Hummelberg in Pfinztal bei Karlsruhe. Der Produktbereich Neue Antriebssysteme und die diversen Motoren- und Abgasprüfstände sind am Campus Ost des Karlsruher Institut für Technologie KIT angesiedelt. Unsere Kunden und Projektpartner sind Unternehmen der Chemie und der chemischen Verfahrenstechnik, Automobilhersteller und deren Zulieferer, Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie, Materialhersteller, Recyclingunternehmen, Unternehmen im Energie- und Umweltbereich, Kunden mit sicherheitstechnischen Fragen, die Bauindustrie und die Luftfahrtindustrie. Zudem sind wir das einzige Explosivstoff-Forschungsinstitut in Deutschland, das den gesamten Entwicklungsbereich vom Labor über das Technikum bis zum System bearbeitet.

As an innovative and internationally recognized partner for research and development, the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST develops future-oriented products – including the associated competitive and scalable production systems. Our research encompasses plant engineering, entire process chains of process engineering, process technology and manufacturing technology all the way through to the consideration of entire factories. Taking the requirements of sustainability within the context of a circular economy as a starting point, we maintain an overview of the entire product life cycle – from the material, through the process of creating the component and product, and on to recycling. In interdisciplinary teams, we offer our customers from industry and research tailored and sustainable solutions for various sectors, e. g. plant and mechanical engineering, tools, vehicle construction, aerospace, energy, optics, medical and pharmaceutical process engineering, agricultural and food industry, environmental technology and the digital economy.
