Finnmarkssykehuset er ett av fem helseforetak i Helse Nord og har ansvaret for spesialisthelsetjenestetilbudet i Finnmark fylke. Den psykiatriske helsetjenesten og rusomsorgen er svært desentralisert og lokalisert i hele fylket. Finnmark har for en godt utbygd desentralisert spesialisthelsetjeneste – Alta-modellen fremstår i nasjonal sammenheng som et utstillingsvindu for gode og velfungerende desentraliserte spesialisthelsetjenester. I tillegg har vi en betydelig aktivitet i Karasjok, hvor vi har et spesielt fokus på helsetjenester til den samiske befolkningen. De fleste kommunene i Finnmark har sykestueplasser – totalt 40 – som Finnmarkssykehuset finansierer/subsidierer, og som ut fra avstander og befolkningstetthet gir befolkningen i Finnmark et godt og trygt helsetilbud i nærheten av der de bor. Finnmarkssykehuset har valgt å organisere sin virksomhet i 5 enheter (klinikker): Kirkenes, Hammerfest, klinikk for psykisk helsevern og rus, prehospitale tjenester og drift. Støttefunksjonene (økonomi, regnskap, personal, lønn, teknisk drift og forskning- og fagutvikling) er virksomhetsovergripende. På grunn av de store avstandene i fylket, er det vedtatt å opprettholde to sykehus med akuttfunksjoner innen medisin, kirurgi og fødselsomsorg. Psykiatrien består av 3 DPS-er, lokalisert i 6 ulike geografiske områder i fylket. Innen psykiatrien har vi et Samisk Nasjonalt Kompetansesenter (SANKS) som har et nasjonalt ansvar for å tilby og utvikle helsetjenester til den samiske befolkningen.
