Fjellanger Detection and Training Academy is a center for research and development focused on the application of the sense of smell of dogs for detection tasks, primarily using remote scent tracing technology. The company has a group of expert people in the field of engineering, chemistry, animal training and data analysis. They provide services to support correct application of the dog’s sense of smell in different fields ranging from handler education to quality control methodology. CUI Detecting Corrosion Under Insulation for the oil industry is the result of one of FDTA’s research projects. This task requires close cooperation between the plant and FDTA to optimally integrate CUI detection into the plant maintenance system. Taking samples can be conducted by FDTA staff, or FDTA can train plant staff to do this. FDTA trains the dogs and performs the analysis of the samples. Results of the analysis are communicated back to the plant. RST-technology Remote Scent Tracing is a methodology where the samples collected in different environments are taken into a laboratory environment where trained dogs investigate the volatiles collected on the samples and respond to the ones they have been trained to detect. This technology can be used for situations where dogs cannot be used directly: • High volume throughput • High temperatures • Unsafe environments • Covert operations • Hygiene considerations (eg hospitals) • Cultural considerations (eg mosques) The samples are brought into a stable environment with optimal detection conditions. The final evaluation of the samples is based on the result of a group of dogs.

The buildings have been vacant for over seventeen years and FJM will be restoring this collection of buildings into an exciting mix of hotel , hospitality and retail uses, which forms part of the redevelopment of the entire precinct by its project partners. Works are well progressed and are scheduled for completion early 2015. The greater precinct bounded by Barrack Street, Hay Street, St Georges Terrace and Pier street also includes the construction of a new office tower, new City of Perth Library, refurbishment of Church House (formerly Public Trustee Building) and a rejuvenated St Georges Square.
