Great Southern Rail's vision is to build the whole touring experience over and above being simply a rail transport operator. Major initiatives such as the creation of the Great Southern Rail holiday program, the extension of The Ghan journey to Darwin in 2004, the relaunch of the newly refurbished The Overland, and the introduction of Platinum Service and the launch of The Southern Spirit are evidence of a continuous product improvement strategy and commitment to tourism growth by Great Southern Rail. The Great Southern Specialist Centre is a multi-disciplinary state-of-the-art health centre, scheduled to open in July, that will service the Great Southern and surrounding community through the provision of timely access and a high standard of quality care to patients. We aim to create a central referral resource for local and visiting specialists to meet the medical needs of the growing population. Our services will not only complement the existing provision of specialist care to public patients, they will also fill the gap of locally provided specialist services for private health patients. Private patients will have far greater access to specialist health providers and there will be a significantly reduced need to travel to Perth to receive the specialist treatment they require. Instead they will have the option to be treated at the Great Southern Specialist Centre incorporating the latest technology and research along with dedicated support personnel. The Great Southern region is currently serviced by a number of local and visiting specialists, although there is only limited availability and funding within the current public health system. We aim to ensure the services provided by all visiting and local specialists are maximised and believe this will attract more specialists to live in and visit the region. Our purpose-built medical centre boasts six generous-sized consulting rooms and one procedural room located on Cockburn Road, Albany. It will be equipped with a tele-health capacity, enabling patients from around the region to see a specialist without having to travel to Albany. The Great Southern Specialist Centre is due to open July 2, 2018
