museums and institutions
In an attempt to preserve the historical memory of the Homeland War for posterity, in 2007 the City of Dubrovnik approved the Project on Establishment of the Homeland War Museum with the design solution for its permanent display as developed by Varina Jurica Turk and Mišo Đuraš, and also made the decision to house it in the premises of the Imperial Fortress on Srđ Hill the symbol of the city's heroic defence in 1991. As part of the preparatory works on the future permanent display, the same two individuals organized the thematic exhibition Dubrovnik in the Homeland War, 1991-1995, which was opened on Victory and National Thanksgiving Day, 5 August 2008. It was made possible by many years of systematic work involving the collection, protection, analysis and presentation of museum materials which testify to this exceptionally important period of recent history in Dubrovnik and Croatia as a whole. In this manner, all museum collections were enriched, becoming an inescapable wellspring of data for all of those who wish to engage in professional and scholarly research into the Homeland War. The gathering of museum materials conducted in the first half of 2008 by Homeland War Museum project leader Varina Jurica Turk in cooperation with the ZNG Dubrovnik 1991 Association and defenders who distinguished themselves in Dubrovniks defence was particularly important. Through a well-planned campaign, a vast quantity of museum materials was gathered and processed, and thus preserved from destruction and oblivion; it consists of several thousand original wartime photographs and negatives, hundreds of hours of video footage, various items and documents. In the meantime, work continued on the expansion of the museum collections and the now already permanent exhibition Dubrovnik in the Homeland War, 1991-1995 with new content, even though the planned restoration of the Imperial Fortress had not even begun.
hospital & health care
Homeless Healthcare is a charity dedicated to providing healthcare to Perth's homeless and marginally housed. Improved health and wellbeing is essential if there is to be a real chance of a person breaking the cycle of homelessness. Homeless Healthcare recognises that health problems do not occur independently of social problems. We have the dual aim of improving the health and welfare of people while they are homeless, and of providing ongoing healthcare and support to enable people to break the cycle of homelessness. Access to appropriate healthcare has many barriers for homeless people. Homeless Healthcare aims to provide equity and access to high quality healthcare that meets the unique needs of our patients. Our clinicians have significant experience in delivering primary healthcare services catering specifically for homeless and marginalised people. Our dedicated team of doctors and nurses provide healthcare services with compassion, without judgement, and at no cost to the patient. The underlying philosophy of Homeless Healthcare is one where the patient is respected regardless of background. The two biggest barriers for a homeless person seeking healthcare are: * healthcare isn’t a priority in a subculture pre-occupied with basic survival * previous negative experiences with healthcare services. To overcome these barriers it is vitally important that we recognise that a homeless person is exactly that — a person. They just happen to be homeless. Like all people, recognition of our individual needs and desires is important. As is the process of building trust. Our mission is to be leading health experts providing patient-centred care and advocacy for people experiencing homelessness.
photography
Homelessinfocus is a social venture with the mission to connect people affected by homelessness with the wider community through their art. Homeless In Focus was founded in August 2015. We run an annual photography competition in which single use cameras are provided to those experiencing homelessness for one week for them to capture images that inspire them. The winning photos feature in a calendar, the MySydney calendar, which is sold both online, at markets and in cafes. We also run exhibitions to share the photos produced with the wider community. We are in the process of showcasing the photography in cafes, enabling cafe visitors to purchase the art, with all proceeds going to the participants. We are a not for profit organisation and all proceeds of calendar and art sales are put back into the homeless community through facilitating photography competitions and exhibitions. In the future we are looking to expand to offer photography training and mentoring. We currently operate in Sydney and are intending to broaden our horizons to Melbourne in the future. We are privileged to partner with a number of organisations, including Fuji, PrintCraft, Jet Bar Caffe and the Darcy Project. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and a talent to share. We also believe in promoting those in society who, often through new fault of their own, have fallen on harder times. Our programs offer an opportunity for individuals to have fun, engage with their community and realise their true value and worth in our society.
