Houston Center for Literacy (formerly Houston READ Commission) is working to build a literate, prepared workforce by supporting literacy agencies and programs, engaging the entire community to join us in solving our city's low literacy problem, and connecting learners with the education they need to be prepared for the future. Established in 1988 by the Mayor and City Council, Houston Center for Literacy oversees the Mayor’s Coalition for Literacy, an association of more than one hundred and fifty literacy sites in Houston. These member organizations, also known as literacy providers, offer educational services geared toward the specific needs of their communities.
Houston Chinese Youth Camp is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that hosts a week-long camp where students ages 8-18 can learn about Chinese heritage, gain leadership, and build lifelong friendships. Throughout the day, campers attend classes taught by experienced teachers on different aspects of the Chinese culture, such as: – Dragon Dance – Chinese Yo-yo – Folk Dance – Chinese Dodge ball – Chinese Arts & Crafts In the evening, various activities are held, such as a Chinese dodge ball tournament, talent show, dance party, mini-Olympics, just to name a few. We welcome anyone to attend camp, regardless of whether or not they are of Asian-American descent!
