In November 1961, a small group of individuals intent on saving the Ainsley Hall House from demolition officially incorporated as the Historic Columbia. Over the next five decades the organization, which was founded on the premise of preservation and education, would take on the stewardship of seven historic properties in Richland County. The Historic Houses Association (HHA) represents 1,600 of the UK's privately and charitably owned historic houses, castles and gardens. These are listed buildings or designated gardens, usually Grade I or II*, and are often outstanding. Many are considered to be iconic symbols of Britain's unique heritage. Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 13 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are 38,000 Friends of the HHA. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes. The Historic Houses Association of Australia was formed to raise awareness and support for important local and national properties. It began in Sydney in 1988, alongside the formation of the NSW Governments Historic Houses Trust. It brought together the friends of some of Sydneys most important buildings such as Elizabeth Bay House and Vaucluse House. In 2014, the association became national and fully independent of government and is now a registered charity, not-for-profit and volunteer organisation, with a growing national membership and reach. Our goal is to educate and inform the public through a series of tours and events, to support private owners and to build an environment in which historic properties and places are supported, valued and enjoyed. We provide a forum for owners along with resources and expert advice. We advocate on their behalf to government and educate the public through a dynamic range of events and activities. We also support research to understand the special issues faced by owners of historic properties. We welcome new owners and actively seek private and corporate supporters to protect and promote our shared national heritage.

From our lower Hudson Valley base of operations, we focus on delivering quality educational and entertaining experiences, striking a balance between tradition and vision, from preserving the past, to contextualizing it for 21st-century audiences. Historic Hudson Valley operates tours and public programming at Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate, Philipsburg Manor, Union Church, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, and Van Cortlandt Manor. These sites help us make meaning for visitors in a variety of settings, including traditional house and landscape tours, formal educational programs for school children, popular on-site special events, and digital media.
