2008 yılında, 'İstanbul Gelişim Meslek Yüksekokulu'​ adında Meslek Yüksekokulu kurmak üzere girişimde bulunan “Gelişim Eğitim Kültür Sağlık ve Sosyal Hizmet Vakfı”, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı ve Bakanlar Kurulu’nca 14 Haziran 2008 tarihinde kurduğu Meslek Yüksekokulu ile eğitim – öğretim hayatına başladı. 17 Şubat 2011 tarih ve 6114 sayılı kanunla, 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında 5 Fakülte, 3 Enstitü, 3 Yüksekokul ve 2 Meslek Yüksekokulu ile “dünya üniversitesi” olmak adına atılan adımla, İstanbul Gelişim Üniversitesi kuruldu.
