Iğdır Üniversitesinin temeli, Iğdır Meslek Yüksekokuluna dayanır. 1995 yılında Kafkas Üniversitesine bağlı olarak kurulan Iğdır Meslek Yüksekokulu ilk yılında sadece İşletmecilik bölümüyle, 20 öğrencisine, 16 okutman, 1 hizmetli ve 1 memur ile hizmet vermeye başlamıştır. 22.05.2008 tarihinde, Yükseköğretim Kurumları Teşkilatı Kanununun Ek 100. Maddesi uyarınca, bünyesinde 3 fakülte, 2 meslek yüksekokulu ve 3 enstitü ile Iğdır Üniversitesi resmi olarak kurulmuştur. 2008 yılından bu yana, gerek fiziksel gerekse akademik anlamda kuruluş evresini büyük oranda tamamlayan Üniversitemiz, bugün itibariyle, 7 fakülte, 2 yüksekokul, 4 meslek yüksekokulu,3 enstitü, 3 koordinatörlük, 8 uygulama ve araştırma merkezinin yanında 3366 önlisans, 2516 lisans, 495 yüksek lisans ve 3 doktora öğrencisi olmak üzere toplam 6380 öğrencisi ile bölgemiz ve Türkiyenin saygın üniversitelerinden biri olma yolunda emin ve kararlı adımlarla ilerlemektedir. Ülkemizin en genç üniversitelerinden biri olan Iğdır Üniversitesi, hayata geçirdiği ve devam etmekte olan projeleriyle hızlı gelişimini sürdürmektedir. Bu anlamda, yakın zamanda hayata geçirilen önemli projelerden biri, 2016 yılında hizmete açılan Araştırma Laboratuvarı Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi (ALUM)dir. Sahip olduğu modern ve teknik cihazlarla merkez, gerek Üniversitemiz gerekse bölge üniversitelerindeki araştırmacıların faydalandıkları büyük bir araştırma laboratuvarı durumundadır. Üniversitemiz Şehit Bülent Yurtseven Kampüsü içerisinde, 3000 kişilik Üniversite Camii Projesi; içerisinde atletizm, basketbol, tenis ve futbol halı sahası bulunduran Açık Hava Spor Tesisleri Projesi; ailelerin, yöre halkının ve personelimizin eğlence ve dinlenme ihtiyacını karşılayacak ve aynı zamanda öğrenci gruplanın da farklı etkinlikler düzenleyebileceği Seyir Tepesi ve Mesire Alanı Projesi, Hayvan Hastanesi Projesi, Mediko-Sosyal Binası Projesi ve Peyzaj Projesi 2017 yılı içerisinde, tamamlanıp hizmete sunulması planlanan projelerdir.
