The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festivals show students a different, and more engaging, side of mathematics from what's typically presented in their classes at school. Julia Robinson was a mathematics professor at UC Berkeley for many years, and is known for her solution of Hilbert's tenth problem. The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festivals began in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2007 to honor her legacy and encourage more students to pursue mathematics, and have since expanded to other cities around the U.S. Festivals give students an opportunity to pursue mathematics collaboratively, working on problems and puzzles with other students and mathematicians. The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festivals are an educational outreach program of the American Institute for Mathematics (www.aimath.org).
