Kiel University (CAU) was founded back in 1665. It is Schleswig-Holstein's oldest, largest and best-known university, with 27,000 students and around 3,000 members of staff. It is also the only fully-fledged university in the state. Seven Nobel prize winners have worked here. The CAU has been successfully taking part in the Excellence Initiative since 2006.

Kielder Observatory is located in the middle of Kielder forest in the heart of the gold tier Nothumberland International Dark Sky Park. We run events most nights of the year for the public to come and experience breathtaking dark skies and learn about the universe. We also have tailored events for families, SEN events and specialist events such as learning to image the night sky. Our experienced team of astronomer science communicators work with local schools and organisations to further STEM education in the North East - to ensure that special Kielder moment of inspiration is accessible to everyone.
