Kotka on Kymenlaakson toiseksi suurin kaupunki ja sijaitsee Suomenlahden rannikolla, Kymijoen suistossa. Kaupunki tunnetaan mm. Alueella toimii jo upea ja useasti palkittu Merikeskus Vellamo, joka pitää sisällään Suomen merimuseon, Kymenlaakson museon ja Merivartiomuseon. Lisäksi alueelle on valmistunut risteily- ja matkustajaterminaali. Kotkan-Haminan seudun akkumateriaalitehdashankkeet ovat Suomen suurimmat ja käynnistyttyään tehtaat työllistäisivät ensivaiheessa arvion mukaan suoraan yhteensä 400 henkilöä. Aluetalousvaikutukset alkavat kuitenkin näkyä ensimmäiseksi rakentamisen aikaisina suorina sekä tuotannon ja kulutuksen kerrannaisvaikutuksina, jotka heijastuvat useille eri aloille.
